Denial of Petition for Rulemaking; Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

Résumé
This document denies Mr. John K. Roberts' petition to amend Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment, to add requirements regarding the maximum time for a stop lamp to reach 90 percent of its required illumination. A requirement of this nature could be met using currently-available technology such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), neon lamps, hot filament systems, or shuttered systems. However, the costs associated with such a requirement would be far in excess of its benefits.
