The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing that American Science and Engineering, Inc., has filed a petition proposing that the food additive regulations be amended to provide for the safe use of X-radiation, produced by the operation of X-ray tubes at energy levels of 500,000 electron volts (500 keV) or lower, to inspect cargo containers that may contain food.
