The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing that the United States Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service has filed a petition proposing that the food additive regulations be amended to increase the maximum dose of ionizing radiation permitted in the treatment of poultry products, include specific language intended to clarify the poultry products covered by the regulations, and remove the limitation that any packaging used during irradiation of poultry shall not exclude oxygen.
