Daimler Coaches North America, LLC (DCNA), a subsidiary of Daimler AG, has determined that certain model year (MY) 2012-2019 Setra S407 and MY 2009-2020 Setra S417 buses do not fully comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101, Controls and Displays. DCNA filed a noncompliance report dated July 15, 2020 and amended its report on July 16, 2020 and March 24, 2021. DCNA petitioned NHTSA (the "Agency") on August 4, 2020 for a decision that the subject noncompliances are inconsequential as they relate to motor vehicle safety. On October 1, 2020 DCNA submitted an amended petition to the Agency. Additionally, DCNA submitted supplemental information to NHTSA on February 5, 2021, March 5, 2021, and March 25, 2021. This notice announces the denial of DCNA's petition.

Denial of Motor Vehicle Defect Petition, DP25-001

This notice sets forth the reasons for the denial of a defect petition (DP25-001) submitted by Mr. Luis Armando Vega on August 14, 2025, requesting that the Agency initiate a safety defect investigation into premature degradation and detachment of the plastic underbody shields on Model Year (MY) 2020 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company. After conducting a technical review of the petition and other information, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation has concluded that that the issues raised by the petition do not warrant a defect investigation at this time. Zoox-Receipt of Application for Temporary Exemption From Various Requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for an Automated Driving System-Equipped Vehicle; Request for Comment

Zoox, Inc. ("Zoox") has petitioned NHTSA for a temporary exemption from certain requirements in eight Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) applicable to its passenger car equipped with an automated driving system (ADS). Specifically, Zoox seeks exemption from portions of FMVSS No. 103, Windshield defrosting and defogging systems; FMVSS No. 104, Windshield wiping and washing systems; FMVSS No. 108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment; FMVSS No. 111, Rear visibility; FMVSS No. 135, Light vehicle brake systems; FMVSS No. 201, Occupant protection in interior impact; FMVSS No. 205, Glazing materials; and FMVSS No. 208, Occupant crash protection. NHTSA is publishing this document in accordance with statutory and administrative provisions and seeks comment on the merits of Zoox's exemption application and on potential terms and conditions that should be applied to a temporary exemption if granted. After receiving and considering public comments, NHTSA will make a decision on the merits of the application and will publish a notice in the Federal Register setting forth NHTSA's reasoning for either granting or denying the petition.

Initial Decision That Certain Frontal Driver Air Bag Inflators Manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN) Contain a Safety Defect

NHTSA has made an initial decision that certain air bag inflators manufactured by DTN contain a defect related to motor vehicle safety. Available information demonstrates that the inflators were imported into the United States by unknown importers (likely illegally). NHTSA is aware of twelve instances in which the inflators have ruptured in vehicles in the United States, resulting in ten fatalities and two severe injuries. Following this initial decision, NHTSA is required by statute to seek public comment and allow the manufacturer an opportunity to dispute the initial decision. After review of any comments or additional relevant information, should NHTSA makes a final determination that the subject inflators contain a defect related to motor vehicle safety, the sale of the inflators (whether separately or installed in an air bag module) in the United States would be illegal.
