The Coast Guard announces its acceptance of sewage treatment plants (also referred to as marine sanitation devices) for type- approval to International Maritime Organization resolution MEPC.227(64) as meeting the requirements for marine sanitation devices. This action will allow manufacturers as well as shipowners and operators the option to take advantage of building and using equipment that meets both domestic and international requirements while also benefitting the environment. The Coast Guard is also seeking information on simple on board checks to verify performance of sewage treatment plants.

Foam Fire-Extinguishing Systems

The Coast Guard must approve marine foam fire-extinguishing systems. Currently, eight guidance documents set out the existing type approval criteria. The Coast Guard proposes to update and codify the type approval criteria to reflect current industry practices. Criteria updates would reflect advancements in technology, reduce certain testing and design requirements, and reduce the administrative burden on industry and the government. This deregulatory measure would result in cost savings for industry and the government.

Safety Zones; Annual Events in the Captain of the Port Eastern Great Lakes Zone

The Coast Guard will enforce multiple safety zones located in federal regulations for recurring marine events taking place in June and July 2026 to provide for the safety of life on navigable waterways during these events. Our regulation for marine events within the Coast Guard Great Lakes District identifies the regulated areas for these events. During the enforcement periods, the operator of any vessel in the regulated area must comply with directions from the Captain of the Port Eastern Great Lakes or a designated representative.

The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone for navigable waters in the Cape Charles Harbor, in Cape Charles, VA. The safety zone is needed to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment from potential hazards associated with a fireworks display. Entry of vessels or persons into this zone is prohibited unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port, Sector Virginia, or their designated representative.

The Coast Guard will enforce the safety zone for Events at Lakeshore State Park, Milwaukee, WI, on a portion of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, WI, for a series of dates in June, July, and August 2026. The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone for navigable waters on the Cheboygan River from the Cheboygan Lock & Dam Complex to the Lincoln Bridge.
