The Bureau of Land Management has received a request from the Department of Energy to withdraw 308,600 acres of public land from surface entry and mining for a period of 20 years to evaluate the land for the potential construction, operation, and maintenance of a branch rail line for the transportation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in the event the Nuclear Regulatory Commission authorizes a geologic repository at Yucca Mountain as provided for under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended.
