NHTSA Denies Petition to Require Seat Belt Sensors in New Vehicles
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has denied a petition from Mr. Les Boyd, requesting that the agency consider requiring motor vehicle manufacturers to equip new vehicles with instrumentation to alert nearby police when an unbelted occupant is driving. The agency rejected the proposal, citing high costs and limited effectiveness in states with mandatory safety belt use laws.
