Final Decision That Certain Nonconforming Vehicles Are Eligible for Importation
This document announces a final decision by the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that certain motor vehicles that are certified by their manufacturers as complying with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, Occupant Restraint Systems, but do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, Occupant Crash Protection, are nevertheless eligible for importation into the United States because (1) they are substantially similar to vehicles that were originally manufactured for sale in the United States and that were certified by their manufacturers as complying with the safety standards, and (2) they are capable of being readily altered to conform to FMVSS No. 208.
