U.S. Department of Transportation Proposes Fee Increases for Motor Vehicle Importation and Registration

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed fee increases for Fiscal Year 1997, as authorized by 49 U.S.C. 30141, to cover the costs of registering importers and importing motor vehicles that do not meet Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS). The proposed fee increases range from $0.20 to $721, with the goal of reimbursing the U.S. Customs Service for bond processing costs and covering the costs of determining whether nonconforming vehicles can be converted to meet FMVSS.
