NRC Denies Petition for Rulemaking on In-Core Thermocouples in Nuclear Power Plants

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has denied a petition by Mark Leyse to require nuclear power plants to use in-core thermocouples at different elevations and radial positions to measure a wide range of core temperatures. The NRC found that existing core exit thermocouples are sufficient for operator action in the event of an accident and that there is no operational necessity for more accurate temperature measurements.
