NMFS Issues Final Rule for Local Area Management Plan in Sitka Sound, Alaska
Summary
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has implemented a Local Area Management Plan (LAMP) for the halibut fishery in Sitka Sound, Gulf of Alaska, restricting fishing with setline gear for vessels over 35 feet in length from June 1 to August 31, and prohibiting charter vessels and vessels under 35 feet in length from fishing with setline gear during this period, in an effort to address declining halibut populations and align with the North Pacific Fishery Management Council's goals and objectives.
