NHTSA Allows Importation of Non-Compliant 1974-1975 Volkswagen Type 181 MPVs

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has made a decision to permit the importation of 1974-1975 Volkswagen Type 181 (``The Thing'') multi-purpose passenger vehicles that do not meet all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards, as they are substantially similar to U.S.-certified versions and can be modified to comply with safety regulations.
