General Motors Corporation (GM) has been granted an exemption from the vehicle theft prevention standard for its high-theft line, the Oldsmobile Alero, due to the effectiveness of its antitheft device. The exemption was granted after the agency determined that the device would be as effective as parts-marking requirements in reducing and deterring motor vehicle theft.
