FDA Reopens Comment Period for Proposed Rule on Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) Status

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reopening the comment period for the proposed rule published on April 17, 1997, which aims to replace the voluntary petition process with a voluntary notification procedure for substances intended for use in food for humans or animals, and to clarify the criteria for exempting the use of a substance as GRAS.
