NMFS Proposes Revised Regulations for Transshipment and Port Inspection of Atlantic Highly Migratory Species

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is proposing changes to its regulations governing transshipment and international port inspection for vessels with permits for Atlantic highly migratory species (HMS), in line with recommendations from the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). The proposed rule would expand the current prohibition on transfer at sea to include all tuna and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean, both at sea and in port, and would also prohibit the transfer of HMS by U.S. vessels outside the Atlantic Ocean and its surrounding seas.
