Basis Reporting by Securities Brokers and Basis Determination for Stock: Proposed Regulations

The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 requires brokers to report the customer's adjusted basis in sold securities and classify gains or losses as long-term or short-term when selling securities. The proposed regulations also alter how taxpayers compute basis when averaging shares acquired at different prices and expand the ability to compute basis by averaging.
