FDA Amends Food Additive Regulations for Paper and Paperboard Components
The FDA is updating its regulations to allow the safe use of a specific chemical, 1,3-dihalo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, in paper and paperboard products that come into contact with food, in response to petitions from companies Great Lakes Chemical Corp. and Lonza, Inc. The new rules will limit the amount of this chemical to 20% of another related compound, 1,3-dihalo-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin.
