Fire Protection Measures for Towing Vessels

This interim rule implements measures for the early detection and control of fires on towing vessels. These measures increase the chances of fighting a fire with early warnings and better communications, and controlling the fire with shut-off valves and training and drills. The rule should decrease the number and severity of injuries to vessels' crews, prevent damage to vessels, structures and other property, and reduce the likelihood of a tank barge's drifting, grounding, and ultimately spilling its cargo.
