NMFS Closes Herring Savings Areas to Pollock Fishing in Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands

Summary

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has closed the Herring Savings Areas in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area to directed fishing for pollock by vessels using trawl gear due to the depletion of Pacific herring, a key species in the midwater pollock fishery category, which has reached its 1994 trawl bycatch allowance.
