FDA Releases Draft Guidance on Menu Labeling Provisions of Affordable Care Act
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a draft guidance document outlining questions and answers regarding the implementation of the menu labeling provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, which requires certain chain restaurants and vending machine operators to provide calorie information and other nutrition details for standard menu items and food on display. The law, signed on March 23, 2010, mandates these disclosures for chain retail food establishments with 20 or more locations and chain vending machine operators with 20 or more machines, but allows smaller establishments to opt-in by registering every other year with the FDA.
