NNSA to Prepare Environmental Impact Statement for Surplus Plutonium Disposition Program

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) plans to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate alternatives for safely and efficiently disposing of surplus plutonium, in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The EIS will consider the 'plutonium downblending' method and other reasonable alternatives, which may require new or existing facilities at the Savannah River Site, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Pantex Plant, and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.
