US Forest Service to Prepare Environmental Impact Statement for Pactola Project Area Treatment
The US Forest Service plans to prepare an environmental impact statement for a proposal to treat an area of 26,017 acres in the Black Hills National Forest, South Dakota, to combat a mountain pine beetle epidemic and reduce the risk of severe wildfires near communities. The project, authorized under the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003, aims to thin and harvest pine stands, reduce tree density, and create a more fire-resistant landscape.
