Audi of America Petitions NHTSA for Temporary Exemption to Use Camera Monitor System Instead of Outside Mirrors

Audi of America has submitted a petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) seeking a temporary exemption from the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, which requires passenger cars, MPVs, and light trucks to be equipped with outside mirrors on the driver's side that meet certain field-of-view and mounting requirements. Audi is seeking to use a Camera Monitor System (CMS) instead, which provides a video-generated image on a monitor, and claims it meets the same field-of-view requirements as outside mirrors.
