NRC Receives Request from SMUD to Amend Rancho Seco ISFSI License for Byproduct Nuclear Material Storage

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received a request from Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to amend the license for the Rancho Seco Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) to allow the storage of byproduct nuclear material, which would enable SMUD to test radiation detection instruments. The NRC is evaluating whether this request meets the criteria for a categorical exclusion from a required environmental assessment.
