NRC Reviews SMUD's Request to Amend Rancho Seco Nuclear Storage License

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) reviewed an application by Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to amend the Materials License No. SNM-2510, which permits the storage of spent nuclear fuel and hazardous waste at the Rancho Seco Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation in Herald, California. SMUD requested permission to continue storing byproduct nuclear material to test the accuracy of radiation detection instruments.
