US Fish and Wildlife Service Proposes Threatened Status for Island Grouper and Endangered Status for Gulf Grouper Under Endangered Species Act
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has announced its 12-month findings and listing determinations for the island grouper (Mycteroperca fusca) and the gulf grouper (Mycteroperca jordani) under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The NMFS has determined that the gulf grouper is at risk of extinction throughout its range and therefore qualifies as an endangered species, while the island grouper is considered threatened due to its likely future risk of extinction.
