FDA Bans Certain Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Food Labels
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a rule to prohibit nutrient content claims for foods containing alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) omega-3 fatty acids, based on a determination that such claims do not meet the requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The decision follows three notifications from seafood processors, Martek Biosciences Corp., and Ocean Nutrition Canada, Ltd.
