NICEATM Releases Report on In Vitro Ocular Toxicity Test Methods for Identifying Severe Irritants and Corrosives
The National Toxicology Program's Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (NICEATM) has made available a report on the evaluation of four in vitro ocular toxicity test methods, including the Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability (BCOP) test, the Isolated Chicken Eye (ICE) test, the Isolated Rabbit Eye (IRE) test, and the Hen's Egg Test--Chorioallantoic Membrane (HET-CAM). The report provides recommendations for the use of these methods in a tiered testing strategy to determine ocular hazards and classifies substances that test positive as ocular corrosives or severe irritants without further testing in animals.
