SSA to Change Direct Payment of Fees to Representatives for Services Before Social Security Administration or Federal Courts, Effective January 1, 2007

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is issuing a notice to inform attorneys and non-attorneys representing claimants before SSA, as well as attorneys representing Social Security or Supplemental Security Income claimants before federal courts, that the requirements for SSA to pay approved fees directly to representatives from claimants' past-due benefits will change on January 1, 2007. The SSA will now require representatives to submit more information to meet the requirements of the Internal Revenue Code, which mandates the issuance of Form 1099-MISC for aggregate fees of $600 or more in a calendar year.
