Medicare Program; Changes to Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System and Calendar Year 2006 Payment Rates

The Medicare program is revising its hospital outpatient prospective payment system to align with statutory requirements and implement changes from its experience with the system, as well as provisions from the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003. The changes, effective January 1, 2006, include updates to payment rates and factors, as well as a shift in physician oversight for mid-level practitioners in critical access hospitals.
