NRC Denies Nevada's Petition to Amend 1990 Waste Confidence Decision

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has denied a petition submitted by the State of Nevada to amend a 1990 rulemaking decision regarding the availability of a mined geologic repository for spent nuclear fuel. The NRC rejected the petition, stating that it misinterpreted the original decision and failed to meet the criteria for reopening the Waste Confidence findings, which were established in 1999.
