HHS Proposes Changes to Medicare Physician Identification System

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is proposing to modify the Unique Physician/Practitioner Identification Number (UPIN) system, which is used to identify Medicare physicians, in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974. The proposed changes aim to restrict the disclosure of certain records to contractors and other organizations, and will take effect on an unspecified date.
