Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling of Beef, Lamb, Pork, Fish, Perishable Agricultural Commodities, and Peanuts
The US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is extending the public comment period for its proposed rule on mandatory country of origin labeling for certain food products until February 27, 2004, at the request of industry trade associations. The proposed rule, mandated by the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 and the 2002 Supplemental Appropriations Act, aims to require retailers to notify customers of the country of origin of covered commodities starting September 30, 2004.
