NMFS Issues Final Rule to Implement 2002 Management Measures for Eastern Tropical Pacific Tuna Stocks

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has issued a final rule to implement management measures to prevent overfishing of eastern tropical Pacific tuna stocks, as recommended by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). The measures, approved by the Department of State (DOS) under the Tuna Conventions Act, will close the purse seine fishery for tuna in the Convention Area in December 2002 to limit total fishing mortality and maintain sustainable tuna stocks.
