NRC and EPA Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Decommissioning and Decontamination of Contaminated Sites

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the radiological decommissioning and decontamination of contaminated sites. The agreement allows EPA to defer exercising its authority under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (Superfund) for most facilities decommissioned under NRC oversight.
