NMFS Issues Final Rule to Implement Conservation Measures for U.S. Pacific Tuna Fisheries
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has issued a final rule to reduce bycatch of juvenile tuna, non-target fish species, and non-fish species in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) purse seine fishery, in accordance with the Tuna Conventions Act of 1950, and in collaboration with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the U.S. Department of State (DOS). The rule establishes reporting requirements for U.S. vessels fishing for tuna in the EPO to aid in the creation of a regional vessel register, promoting consistent compliance across IATTC member nations.
