NRC Denies UCS Petition for Rulemaking on Radioactive Waste Systems

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has denied a petition from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to modify its regulations regarding the aging of liquid and gaseous radioactive waste management systems. The NRC found that these systems are not critical to license renewal and that the existing regulatory process is sufficient to maintain performance and radiation exposure levels.
