Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Address Orphan Sources
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to address the issue of unwanted and uncontrolled radioactive materials, known as 'orphan sources'. The agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of the NRC and DOE in responding to orphan sources, particularly when the NRC leads the federal response and immediate health and safety hazards have been addressed.
