Susan Harwood Training Grant Program

Under the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program, OSHA makes two types of grants to non-profit institutions. Institutional Competency Building grants, under which the solicitation for proposals was published on August 17, 2000, at 65 FR 50220-50223, are intended to encourage the development of institutional competence in occupational safety and health issues among private, nonprofit institutions over a 3-5 year period. OSHA has also made Targeted Training grants available to nonprofit institutions to develop training sources and materials relating to specific occupational safety or health topics. Targeted Training grants typically have been one-time grants intended to fund the development of a specific training-related resource or service. OSHA is currently reassessing its priorities between these two types of grants and is considering which of these types of grants will produce the more direct and immediate impact on worker safety, and will be sustainable by OSHA in light of the funding likely to be available for longer-term grants. Cranes and Derricks in Construction: Railroad Roadway Work

OSHA is revising the standard for cranes and derricks in construction to provide specific exemptions and clarifications with regard to the application of the standard to cranes and derricks used for railroad roadway work. These exemptions and clarifications recognize the unique equipment and circumstances in railroad roadway work and reflect the preemption of some OSHA requirements by regulations promulgated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The revised standard provides a clearer understanding of which regulatory requirements are applicable, resulting in a more effective regulatory program and ultimately improved safety.

STP Nuclear Operating Company; Application for Permanent Variance and Interim Order; Grant of Interim Order; Request for Comments

Occupational Exposure to Beryllium and Beryllium Compounds in Construction and Shipyard Sectors

OSHA is amending its existing construction and shipyard standards for occupational exposure to beryllium and beryllium compounds to clarify certain provisions and simplify or improve compliance. These changes are designed to accomplish three goals: to more appropriately tailor the requirements of the construction and shipyards standards to the particular exposures in these industries in light of partial overlap between the beryllium standards' requirements and other OSHA standards; to aid compliance and enforcement across the beryllium standards by avoiding inconsistency, where appropriate, between the shipyards and construction standards and recent revisions to the general industry standard; and to clarify certain requirements with respect to materials containing only trace amounts of beryllium. This final rule does not affect the general industry beryllium standard.
