U.S. Navy Requests Authorization to Take Marine Mammals Incidental to Navy Operations

The U.S. Navy has submitted a request to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for a Letter of Authorization (LOA) to take small numbers of marine mammals by harassment while conducting surveillance operations with the SURTASS Low Frequency Active Sonar system, with the goal of issuing regulations to minimize the impact on affected species and subsistence uses.
