Western Pacific Pelagic Fisheries; Hawaii-based Pelagic Longline Area Closure

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has issued an emergency rule to temporarily close a fishing area off the coast of Hawaii to reduce the impact on sea turtles, following a court order. The closure, which took effect on November 23, 1999, prohibits vessels from fishing with longline gear in a specific area north of 28 degrees north latitude and between 150 and 168 degrees west longitude.
