DOE to Prepare Environmental Impact Statement for Plutonium-238 Production for Future Space Missions

The US Department of Energy (DOE) plans to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the production of Plutonium-238 (Pu-238) for use in future space missions, as mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The DOE aims to establish a domestic capability to produce Pu-238, which is essential for maintaining its space nuclear power role, as outlined in the National Space Policy statement issued in 1996 and reaffirmed in its charter under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954.
