Crabmeat; Amendment of Common or Usual Name Regulation

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing to amend the regulation for crabmeat by adding the species Callinectes sapidus (C. sapidus) to those listed in the regulation and to provide that the common or usual name of crabmeat derived from this species is ``Blue crabmeat.'' FDA is further proposing, on its own initiative, to adopt common or usual names for 18 additional crab species. FDA is proposing these names based on ``The Seafood List'' and the information provided in the National Blue Crab Industry Association (NBCIA) petition. This proposal, which is in response to a citizen petition submitted by the NBCIA, is intended to allow crabmeat packers to properly identify their product so that consumers can make informed decisions.
