Exemption of Records System Under the Privacy Act
The Department of Justice has exempted a Privacy Act system of records from certain subsections of the Privacy Act, allowing it to maintain records on official Federal investigations and law enforcement matters without interference. This exemption is necessary to protect the identities and safety of informants, law enforcement personnel, and to safeguard classified information.
