Endangered and Threatened Species: Central California Coast Coho Salmon Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU) Listed as Threatened
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has finalized a determination that the Central California coast coho salmon ESU is a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, due to severe declines in native coho salmon populations from human-caused factors such as habitat degradation, overfishing, and water diversion, with estimated naturally-reproducing coho salmon numbers now below 6,000.
