Standard Design Certification for the U.S. Advanced Boiling Water Reactor Design

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or Commission) proposes to approve by rulemaking a standard design certification for the U.S. Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) design. The applicant for certification of the U.S. ABWR design was GE Nuclear Energy. The NRC is proposing to add a new appendix to 10 CFR part 52 for the design certification. This action is necessary so that applicants or licensees intending to construct and operate a U.S. ABWR design may do so by appropriately referencing the proposed appendix. The public is invited to submit comments on this proposed design certification rule (DCR) and the design control document (DCD) that is incorporated by reference into the DCR (refer to Sections IV and V). The Commission also invites the public to submit comments on the environmental assessment for the U.S. ABWR design (refer to Section VI).
