Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; Accelerator Control Systems

NHTSA is considering issuing a proposal to amend the Federal motor vehicle safety standard on accelerator control systems. The standard was last revised in 1973, when only mechanical systems were common on motor vehicles. In order to determine whether to propose amending the standard to include requirements specifically tailored for electronic accelerator control systems and to clarify possibly ambiguous language, NHTSA poses a series of questions in this document. NHTSA undertakes this action as part of its effort to implement the President's Regulatory Reinvention Initiative to make regulations easier to understand and to apply.
