FAA Announces Intent to Prepare Environmental Assessments for National Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to prepare a programmatic environmental assessment (EA) and four site-specific environmental assessments (EAs) for the proposed National Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), a satellite-based navigation system that will enhance aircraft safety by providing better navigation information. The system, which includes hardware and software, as well as four antenna sites, aims to accelerate the realization of significant benefits to aviation system users, as recommended by Senate Report 103-310 of the Committee on Appropriations in fiscal year 1995.
