Quarantine Facilities for Birds

We are revising the bird importation regulations to allow imported birds to be quarantined upon arrival in the United States at any privately owned bird quarantine facility located near an international airport or land-border port served by U.S. Customs, provided the facility meets the standards of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The importation system that allowed bird importations through a limited number of ``approved quarantine facilities'' lacked flexibility, and no longer appears necessary. We are also establishing standards for incubator/hatcher areas and bird holding areas in quarantine facilities for hatching eggs of ratites. These standards will protect U.S. birds and poultry from disease without requiring importers of hatching eggs of ratites to comply with the more stringent standards appropriate for imported birds.
